Products We Use
MOSQUITO TREATMENT PRODUCTS
Four Rivers Vector Control District utilizes science-based, environmentally responsible products as part of an Integrated Vector Management (IVM) program. Our primary focus is larval control—targeting mosquitoes in their aquatic stage before they emerge as biting adults.
Larvicides (Larval Control Products)
Larvicides are applied to standing water habitats where mosquitoes develop. These treatments are highly targeted and represent the most effective and environmentally sound method of mosquito control.
Vectoac® 12AS (Liquid Bti)
- Active Ingredient: Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti), a naturally occurring soil bacterium
- Application: Applied directly to standing water using calibrated backpack or vehicle-mounted sprayers
- Use: Ideal for treating small to medium water bodies with active mosquito larvae
- Mode of Action: Bti produces proteins that specifically disrupt the digestive system of mosquito larvae upon ingestion
- Safety Profile: Highly selective to mosquito, blackfly, and fungus gnat larvae; does not pose a risk to humans, pets, fish, birds, or beneficial insects such as bees and dragonflies when used according to label directions
- Label Information: View EPA-Approved Label for VectoBac® 12AS
VectoBac® G (Granular Bti)
- Active Ingredient: Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti)
- Application: Broadcast over water surfaces using hand application, backpack spreaders, or aerial application (including helicopter)
- Use: Particularly effective in dense vegetation, wetlands, and hard-to-access habitats
- Mode of Action: Ingested by mosquito larvae, resulting in targeted mortality
- Safety Profile: Selective and environmentally compatible; minimal impact on non-target organisms when applied as directed
- Label Information: View EPA-Approved Label for VectoBac® G
VectoBac® WDG (Water-Dispersable Granule)
- Active Ingredient: Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti)
- Application: Mixed with water and applied as a liquid using ground or aerial equipment
- Use: Suitable for a wide range of aquatic habitats, including large or difficult-to-access areas
- Mode of Action: Targets mosquito larvae through ingestion, disrupting gut function
- Safety Profile: Highly specific to target larvae with no significant impact on people, pets, aquatic life, or beneficial insects when used in accordance with the label
- Label Information: View EPA-Approved Label for VectoBac® WDG
By prioritizing larval control with products such as Bti, the District reduces the need for adult mosquito treatments while maintaining a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and public health protection.
Adulticides (Adult Control-(Fogging) Products)
Adult mosquito control, commonly referred to as fogging, is used when surveillance data indicates elevated mosquito populations or increased risk of disease transmission. Applications are conducted during evening and nighttime hours when adult mosquitoes are most active and conditions are optimal for effective treatment
Permasease 4-4
- Active Ingredients: 4% Permethrin, 4% Piperonyl Butoxide (PBO)
- Application: Applied using truck-mounted ULV (ultra-low volume) fogging equipment, which disperses a fine aerosol to control flying adult mosquitoes over a targeted area
- Mode of Action: Permethrin, a synthetic pyrethroid, rapidly affects the nervous system of mosquitoes upon contact. PBO acts as a synergist, inhibiting the mosquito’s natural detoxification enzymes and increasing effectiveness
- Effectiveness: Provides rapid knockdown of adult mosquitoes and helps reduce populations during peak activity periods
- Safety Profile: Applied at very low concentrations to minimize exposure to people, pets, and wildlife. Permethrin degrades relatively quickly in sunlight and is approved for use in residential settings when applied according to label directions

Aqua-Reslin®
- Active Ingredients: Permethrin (synthetic pyrethroid), Piperonyl Butoxide (PBO)
- Application: Applied using ULV truck-mounted or handheld fogging equipment to produce a fine mist for area-wide adult mosquito control
- Mode of Action: Permethrin disrupts the nervous system of adult mosquitoes on contact, while PBO enhances efficacy by inhibiting metabolic resistance mechanisms
- Effectiveness: Provides quick knockdown and control of flying adult mosquitoes, particularly effective in resistance management programs as an alternative mode of action
- Safety Profile: Formulated for use in residential and sensitive environments, including near aquatic habitats when used according to label directions. Applied at ultra-low volumes to reduce non-target exposure
- Label Information: View EPA-Approved Label for Aqua-Reslin®
Adulticide applications are used judiciously and only when necessary, as part of a broader Integrated Vector Management (IVM) program that prioritizes surveillance and larval control to achieve effective, environmentally responsible mosquito management.
